SOP — Seamer Rolls Setup & Seam Check

FUERST WIACEK Version 1.0 | Packaging — canning line | Frequency: when adjusting seamer rolls; per packaging run seam check

Purpose

Correct seamer roll settings are critical for a consistent, hermetic double seam. This SOP covers seamer roll setup and the seam measurement procedure used to verify roll settings and monitor seam quality during packaging.

Reference Spreadsheet

All measurements, calculations, and setup parameters are managed in the Seamer Rolls Spreadsheet.

The spreadsheet has four tabs:

Tab Purpose
Measurements Raw measured values from seam teardowns
Calc Seam Thickness Calculated seam thickness from raw measurement data
Seamer Setup Roll gap settings and setup parameters
Reading Reference guide — how to read and interpret measurements

Seam Parameters

The following parameters are measured during a seam teardown:

Parameter
Countersink Depth
Seam Thickness
Seam Length
Body Hook
Cover Hook
Overlap
Body Hook Butting %
Seam Gap
Free Space
Finished Can Height
Thickness %

Statistical analysis is calculated automatically: n, xq (mean), min, max, range, sigma, Cp, CpK, OG/UG limits.

Seam Check Procedure

Refer to the Reading tab in the spreadsheet for a full guide on interpreting each parameter and its acceptable range.

  1. Pull a can from the line during stable production.
  2. Perform a seam teardown — separate the seam and measure each parameter.
  3. Enter raw values into the Measurements tab.
  4. Review calculated values in the Calc Seam Thickness tab.
  5. Check Cp and CpK against the OG/UG limits. Values outside limits require roll adjustment.
  6. If adjustment is made, pull another can and repeat the check.

Checklist

  • [ ] Can pulled at stable production
  • [ ] Seam teardown performed
  • [ ] All parameters measured and entered into Measurements tab
  • [ ] Calc Seam Thickness tab reviewed
  • [ ] Cp / CpK within OG/UG limits
  • [ ] If out of spec: rolls adjusted, seam re-checked
